Busy Bees
The Busy Bees are a wonderful example of how members can use their time and talents for the ministries of the church. Through their efforts this group has been able to continually contribute monies to the church; they have donated over $60,000 to St. John’s since the group was formed in 1997. Fund-raisers included the sales of hoagies, ham and cheese sandwiches, cookies, baked goods, sticky buns, Christmas and Easter candy, and entertainment books. Members of the Busy Bees have also served luncheons after funerals and pastor cluster meetings, a dinner for the annual PNEC meeting and soup and sandwich suppers before Maundy Thursday services. These dedicated women are very hard working and set a fine example for all of us.
Community Outreach
St. John’s has long realized the importance of community involvement. Annually special offerings are collected to support both the Phoebe Home and Bethany Children’s Home. For the past thirty years, St. John’s has co-hosted with the Lutheran Church a Vacation Bible School and an Easter egg hunt; both of which are open to the children of the community and participated in community Lenten and Thanksgiving services. Monies from these services collections were used to support the Community Emergency Fund for families in need. Members of the congregation have a long history of donating to the community; they have donated “clean-up” kits for victims of Hurricane Katrina, “school kits” for children in Africa, food to a local food bank, diapers to assist a ministry for single moms and Christmas presents to the Bethany Children’s Home. A fund raiser and bake sale were held to help with a young child of the congregation’s medical costs.
Joyful Noise
The Sunday School students participate in our church's offering every Sunday during the weekly worship service. They walk around with their "Joyful Noise" buckets, collecting spare change from the congregation and our guests. The money is donated to a different local charity every month! This year, they have collected donations for the Salvation Army, Miracle League, the Zion Jubilee Breakfast for the Homeless, and Easter Seals. All of the organizations that receive the donations are nonprofit and 100% of the proceeds that are collected are donated. The sound of the change hitting the buckets and being donated for great causes make such a joyful noise!
